About us

It’s easy to be active when you live at Dockside Green:

  • Hop on your bicycle. The 55-kilometre Galloping Goose rail-trail runs past the front door.
  • Roll your canoe across the street. Paddle left for the tree-lined Gorge Waterway. Paddle right for Victoria’s busy Inner Harbour, right again for the Pacific Ocean.
  • Lace up your walking shoes. Dozens of parks and trails await, with ocean views, flowers blooming, and pleasant weather year-round.

We are an older couple, retired since 2002. Victoria, British Columbia is our home base. Staying active is one of our retirement goals, and we aim to hike, bike, or paddle every single day. Check out our blog posts, and you will see how we are working towards our goal.

“Your car needs more exercise,” says the Mini dealer, when we bring our car in for its annual maintenance in 2017. Cute and spunky, our Mini Cooper Clubman cheerfully transported us to campgrounds and trailheads when required, but on most days it languished in our underground parking spot. We sold that cute little car in January 2018, and we have been car-free ever since. The story here.

In 2024 joined a recreational outrigger canoe team at Fairway Gorge Paddling Club, located on the Gorge Waterway. https://www.fgpaddle.com/ A twenty-minute walk (each way) to the paddling club and a two-hour paddle provide a full-body workout – with social benefits.

In October 2025 we moved to Dockside Green’s new rental tower, which boasts a well-equipped gym. With Victoria’s mild weather, we can hike, bike, or paddle outdoors most days of the year, but the indoor fitness centre may prove useful on stormy winter days.

Planning camping trips for grandchildren

The call of the loon, the slap of a beaver’s tale, the crackle of a campfire at the end of the paddling day. Sharing these experiences with grandchildren is one of life’s greatest joys. We have done camping trips with all five of our grandchildren. Some tips we discovered can be found here.
